Soma Nuru is a small school in the slums of Nairobi and offers an escape from the dumping sites and a pathway to a brilliant future for 100 children.
Founded by Dalmas Oyugi, a man who once scavenged these same rubbish fills for survival, our mission is to break the cycle of poverty through the most powerful tool we have: Quality Education. We don’t just build classrooms; we nurture the next generation of Kenyan leaders, engineers, and dreamers.
Our goal is simple but defiant: to ensure that no child in Korogocho is forced to choose between survival and school. Through a partnership with the Social Business Stiftung in Hamburg, we are turning „rubbish to radiance,“ one lesson at a time.
„I remember the smell of the plastic and the heat of the metal. I remember the taste of hotel leftovers. But mostly, I remember the light that almost went out.“
Dalmas Oyugi

My name is Dalmas. I was born in the Korogocho slums, a place where gravity seems to pull harder than anywhere else on earth. When the school fees stopped, the scavenging started. For years, the dumping site was my office, my pantry, and my entire reality.
But a spark of kindness changed everything. A friend of my mother’s church volunteered to pay my fees, allowing me to finish secondary school. That one act of generosity proved that education is the only bridge out of the slums.
Soma Nuru (meaning „Light of Learning“) was born from that same spark. Together with my friend Stephan Creifelds, we realized that giving foodstuffs alone would not support these children in the long term. They needed a hub of creativity and ambition—a place to discover their strengths and turn dreams into realities.
Today, we focus on two critical pillars:
- Infrastructure: Building the physical foundations—classrooms, clean water, and safe latrines—that every child deserves.
- Development: Improving the quality of teaching and the well-being of our students so they can reach their full potential.
When you support Soma Nuru, you aren’t just donating to a charity; you are partnering with a new generation that is shaping its own future and a brighter Kenya for us all.
Join us to fuel this light.
