The Story of Dalmas Oyugi: A Founder Who Never Left
Before Soma Nuru was a school, it was a dream born from survival. Our founder, Dalmas Oyugi, grew up in the heart of the Korogocho slums, where the horizon is defined by Nairobi’s vast dumping sites. His journey from a school dropout to a community leader is the heartbeat of this project—the story of a man who refused to let his community’s light go out.
The Office of Scavenging
Like many children in Korogocho, Dalmas’s childhood was cut short by the harsh reality of poverty. When his parents could no longer afford secondary school fees, he was forced to drop out. His „classroom“ became the nearby dumping site.
For years, Dalmas sought refuge among the hills of waste, scavenging for used plastic and metal materials for recycling. He survived on leftover food from Nairobi’s big hotels and the airport. In those years, the goal wasn’t education; it was simply to see the next sunrise.
The Spark of Opportunity
The trajectory of Dalmas’s life changed because of a single act of community support. A friend of his mother’s church stepped forward and volunteered to pay his school fees, allowing him to return and finish his secondary education.
Though further hurdles prevented him from attending college, his secondary certificate allowed him to secure a job as a car mechanic in a local Nairobi company. Most people would use their first salary to move away and never look back. Dalmas did the opposite.

Leadership Through Sacrifice
„The first thing I did with my first salary was not to increase my standard of living,“ Dalmas remembers. „It was to give back to the community that raised me.“
Dalmas’s commitment is not just a title; it is a daily sacrifice. To this day, Dalmas and his family still live in the heart of the Korogocho slums, sharing the same reality as the children he serves. He does not lead from a distance. Every month, he uses a significant portion of his mechanic’s salary to keep the school running, ensuring that 100 pupils have the chance he almost lost.
The Birth of Soma Nuru
In 2021, Dalmas took the bold step of founding the Redeemer Lives Support Centre. In 2023, a meeting with Stephan Creifelds brought a new dimension to the project. Sharing a common „productive-minded“ vision, they rebranded the mission as Soma Nuru—meaning the „Light of Learning.“
Dalmas realized that while bread fills a stomach for a day, knowledge fills a life forever. By partnering with the Social Business Stiftung in Hamburg, he ensured that his local grassroots effort had the professional transparency and international support needed to thrive.
A Leader Rooted in the Soil
Today, Dalmas stands as a testament to the power of a single chance. He is not an outsider visiting Korogocho; he is a son of its soil. He understands the smell of the rubbish fills and the weight of a heavy heart, but he also knows the brilliance of the children living there.
Under his leadership, Soma Nuru has become more than a building—it is a sanctuary. Supported by the hands of a mechanic and the heart of a father, it is a place where 100 pupils are learning that their origin does not dictate their destination.*
